Barmouth
- the firm sands and a tiny harbour add to the quiet charm of the resort of Barmouth.
Situated at the mouth of the Mawddach river, the town has a sandy beach to the north which provides excellent bathing. This is fine walking country.
The Panorama Walk offers magnificent views of the town and of the estuary, surrounded by mountains. The mile long Barmouth Bridge carries the railway across the estuary and acts as a pedestrian promenade, giving magnificent views of Cader Idris.
The little resort of Fairbourne lies on the south bank of the Mawddach estuary. From here the Fairbourne Railway,
smallest of the Welsh narrow-gauge railways, runs through sand-dunes to Penrhyn Point where it connects with the ferry to Barmouth. Originally a horse-drawn tramway carrying building materials, it was converted for steam locomotives in 1916.
